Weird & wonderful Whitby

Whitby is a town of two halves. Its remoteness has shaped it and its coastal location has defined it. Its rich history is littered with heroes and villains, smugglers and saints (and even the odd polar bear). The folklore of Whitby and the surrounding area is a reach seam of magical and mythical tales that beg to be told and it’s our aim to tell them to those who want to hear.

Today the town is as popular with families looking for a traditional seaside break as it is with bohemians and goths who seek out the alternative side of Whitby’s charms. With its cobbled streets, ancient ruins, sandy beaches and alternative museums not to mention its wealth of fabulous hostelries and independent shops and its numerous festivals, festivities and events, its a town totally unlike any other.

In short, Whitby is a fabulous mix of the traditional and the obscure; where the best of the mainstream British seaside holiday blends with the alternative, artistic and sometimes bizarre. It’s attitudinal, unconventional and incomparable. It's the Jet Black Jewel of the Yorkshire Coast.
